Arimitsu Sake Brewery, nurtured in a peaceful village
Establishment
A Brewery with Over a Century of History
Arimitsu Sake Brewery was founded in 1903 (Meiji 36) by Itaro Arimitsu.
Our fermentation brewery has an even older history, originally built during the Edo period. It has been carefully preserved and continuously improved over the years, allowing us to keep using it to this day.
Though we are a small-scale brewery, the passage of more than a hundred years has imbued our establishment with a profound sense of history and presence.
Location
Blending into the Village Landscape
Our brewery is located in Akano, Aki City, in eastern Kochi Prefecture.
Surrounded by mountains and the sea, this tranquil village offers a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean stretching out before us, while majestic mountains rise in the background.
When the sake-making season begins, white steam from the freshly steamed rice rises into the clear blue sky, filling the air with a sense of calm and tranquility.
In harmony with this natural setting, we dedicate ourselves to the art of sake brewing every day.
Origin
Like Aki Kunitora, a Warlord Loved by the Region
The name “Akitora” is derived from Aki Kunitora, a samurai warlord who ruled the eastern region of Kochi during the Sengoku period (16th century) and was one of the seven great warlords of Kochi.
Unfortunately, he was later defeated in battle by Chosokabe Motochika, who went on to unify Shikoku. However, he is remembered for his legendary act of sacrificing his own life to ensure the safety of his retainers.
The Aki clan was admired and respected by the local people for generations, and their name has been passed down through history.
Even after the fall of the Aki family, the name “Aki” continues to live on as the name of this region.
episode. Itaro Arimitsu and Yataro Iwasaki
The founder of our brewery, Itaro Arimitsu, had a close friendship with Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of Mitsubishi, who was also from Aki in Tosa.
In his youth, when Iwasaki set his aspirations and left his domain to pursue his studies, the Arimitsu family is said to have supported him.
Even after Iwasaki founded Mitsubishi and achieved great success, Itaro continued to visit him, and it is said that they spent long hours in conversation.
Strongly influenced by Iwasaki, Itaro pursued his own ambitions and, with Iwasaki’s support, established a sake brewery—a legacy that continues to this day.
